Today, like all May 25, the day of geek pride is celebrated. Why May 25 and not another date? This is because it was the day the first Star Wars movie was released, but it wasn’t until 2000 until it was recognized as the official celebration of all geeks. In Spain we adopted this appointment in 2006.
The term geek really picks up everyone who likes something in excess, but this day it mostly represents people who are fans of science fiction, fantasy or comic. In recent years, topics related to video games have also been included, since in the last decade the increase in the consumption of this type of entertainment has been the one that has grown the most.
The celebrations of this day have always been parades in the streets of people dressed as their favorite characters and fairs in which they meet artists, actors, etc. But in the last two years as a result of the Covid 19 pandemic, this type of event has not been able to be held and has been transferred to the internet, where the weight of video games is greater.
During the generalized confinement in the world, the sale and consumption of video games increased by 30%, counting both console and computer games, with “free” games prevailing on mobile devices.
This last category is the ones that have triggered the number of benefits the most, since although the game is free to download, within it it has numerous benefits that can only be achieved through payment. These range from extra lives to exclusive items such as the famous surprise boxes, which give you random items. This format has been widely criticized, since they are micropayments that become addictive due to the format and generate a gambling problem that is difficult for the user to identify. One such extreme case is that of an American who spent more than $ 2,600 in one day on the mobile video game Candy Crush.
Video games are currently the most representative among people who are considered geeks, since they usually not only consume this video game, but also buy merchandising related to it: t-shirts, wallets, key chains, figures …
Collecting, as cbr has verified, is one of the most outstanding qualities and activities within the geek group, which includes books, comics, movies, figures, letters … a wide variety of options which make it one of the markets that move the most money in the world. And this is due to the fact that the geek industry that generates the most benefits is the audiovisual, starting in the movies and currently with more boom in the series. Of the major productions released in cinema or on the new digital platforms, the place to which the premieres have been moved as a result of the pandemic, during 2020 four of the ten highest-grossing films can be classified as “geeks”.
The world of “geek” is full of options and is increasingly diverse, the term geek having gone from being a destructive and hateful nickname, to being something normal and a way of identifying oneself according to personal tastes.
