The game In Sound Mind has very characteristic elements of the horror genre in video games, from puzzles to exploration, some moments of stealth and a lot of darkness. However, it manages to differentiate itself and create a unique experience that draws on titles such as Resident Evil and Half Life to create its own reality. What is interesting about this title?
Set in the 1990s , the title puts us in the shoes of a psychologist who must traverse claustrophobic and dark scenarios. The flashlight will be our main ally to avoid shadows, and our path will take us to collect pieces and different elements of the floor and furniture to place it elsewhere. That is to say, a classic mechanic of the survival horror genre that since Alone in the Dark and the first Resident Evil has marked the way forward for many other aspirants of the genre.
The narration , as in the first adventures of the Capcom saga, is developed through the reading of notes, diaries and books, but its setting manages to create its own bias even though many elements are clearly inspired by the first adventure against Umbrella Corporation.
The building of terror
A building full of doors and hiding places is the central point of the adventure, and in the main room we can rest and protect ourselves, like a central HUB from which to continue exploring and discovering what In Sound Mind has to show us. As we move forward, we will discover the secrets of this property that seems to be abandoned in the middle of a flooded city (we can tell if we look at the sales).
Another game mechanic is the addition of cassettes . We can take them to our office and listening to them, the voices of our patients will transport us to their fears and secrets, having to face them. Best of all, each patient’s fears give way to very different scenarios. From some linear and simple, to others totally open where the shadows will surround us and seek to take over us. In Sound Mind creates very diverse enemies and battles, and in order to definitively defeat them we will be forced to use our flashlight and any light source that we find.
Evolution of the character and the setting
Another outstanding aspect of the terrifying development of In Sound Mind is our character. As we find notes and cassettes, and confront our patients’ fears, we will see changes in the building. We will see how the flooding of the city progresses and we will be able to face an entity that haunts us from the beginning, but that we will only be ready to face as we solve the cases of our patients. This unique character development adds even more suspense to the adventure.
An adventure with no release date
In Sound Mind looks good. It has enough of its own traits to differentiate itself in a genre where the puzzle and combat elements don’t stand out much within the horror genre. But the construction of the setting, the development of the character and the evolution of our relationship with the environment end up turning the balance in their favor.
At the moment, the development studio of We Create Stuff has not given a release date. We know that the game will be available for PS5, Xbox Series, PC and Nintendo Switch, a surprise considering that the rest of the previous generation consoles will not receive a version of In Sound Mind, at least in principle.
Without highlighting the technical or visual part, the game looks good but we can hardly say that it makes the most of the latest generation computers or consoles, but it does things well. It generates a dark atmosphere , it has a very attractive use of lights to give variety to the confrontations and it develops in a masterful way while we discover the secrets, hidden truths and worst fears of our psychologist and his patients. What is that mysterious creature that chases us in the building and that as we solve the cases, it takes on a clearer form? Why does the cat chase us both within our patients’ fears and in the real world? What happened in the flooded city?
We will solve all these questions as we progress through the story . With a first-person perspective, which seeks to immerse us even more in the life of our protagonist psychologist, In Sound Mind promises to confront us with darkness and fear through an indirect, but concise narrative. A title where terror will be present more because of the environment and the narrative rhythm, than because of the sudden appearances of monsters (the so-called “jump scares” or “fright jumps”). It remains to have the final version to know if everything that they have been doing well in the development of the title, is really reflected in the final product. Either way, horror video game lovers are already waiting.
